Project time line

Design

The first step after purchasing the land is to create a detailed design based on the topography or land shape. This will guide many of the decisions on how to make efficient use of the land while retaining water and nutrient on the site.

Earthworks for access and water catchment

Recent droughts illustrate the importance of sensible water management. Careful planning and placement of tracks / terraces, swales, tree lines and other infrastructure drastically influences how water enhances on the landscape. Get this right at the start and it's good for ever. This stage would also see the installation of water delivery piping.

Fencing

If we choose the include foraging animals such as sheep, pigs or cattle then there is almost certainly going to be fencing required. This needs to be completed prior to tree planting to protect young trees but is also required for good grazing management of livestock.

Tree planting

Highly under utilized in conventional farming, the benefits of trees are numerous. By moving into the third dimension we can make better productive use of the land whilst cutting down wind exposure, growing crops and many more benefits.

Development goals and time line

The envisioned duration for this project is 5 - 8 years from land purchase to resale. Over this time there will be a number of clearly defined steps and processes to work through to ensure we create a resilient, attractive, naturally abundant self supporting system.
